Hi all

The bug has well and truly bit so I'm looking out for a starters/ beginners perpared Autotest Car.

If anyone has one or knows of one for sale or can even point me in the right direction I'd really appreciate it...

Thanks
Lyndsay Very Happy

Hi Lyndsay, Welcome along.. Good to hear your that your keen to keep autotesting.. Do you need the car to be road legal or are you looking for a out and out autotest car that you can trailer to the events?

Piers

Hi Piers
I suppose it would be better to have a road legal car for multi venues but I'm going to have to keep costs down so I guess option B - a trailer car - will be the way to go for now...

Thanks
Lyndsay

Hi Lyndsay, Did that car you were driving on Sunday have power steering? If so, you could just get it lowered, fit a bucket seat, lap belt and off you go.. I'm not familiar with how those cars stand up to abuse. It looks small & light which is a good thing...

The steering in it was my problem (well one of them Very Happy ), it doesn't have power steering and I just didn't have the strength to get it around... It's unfortunate because it's a great little car otherwise and could easily stand up to the abuse... Noel flew around in it (while he was in the seat) but I noticed the difference straight away in the Corsa before my dramatic exit, which had power steering, it was so much easier...

Hi Lyndsay, If you know someone who is handy at working on cars you could get electric power steering from a corsa fitted.. Its a common conversion and parts can easily found.. It's pretty straightforward.
You'd also have to refit the cars boot lid to keep within the regulations.

Do you mean that I could put the power stering from a Corsa into the Kia Pride I had on Sunday without power steering...? (Sorry I'm a technophobe)

Yep, That's what I'm saying.. Stick Corsa power steering in the Kia, lower the suspension, fit a bucket seat, a proper steering knob and your all sorted.. Corsa power steering columns usually sell for 100 (or maybe if you know of a corsa being scrapped you could get it removed)..

Here's a pic of corsa power steering fitted to Damien Phillips starlet..

Glad I could help, I believe the Kia Pride is a rebadged Mazda 121.. Let me know if its fuel injected or has a carburettor. A small (20) marine fuel tank fitted to the inside of the car will also help cut down weight at the rear of the car...

Piers, where can I get one of those marine fuel tanks you mentioned?, the Mini's tank is fairly rotten and I cant imagine its any good for the petrol. There's a baffle in my current tank but do the marine ones have that? Thanks...

Hi Phillip, If you have carbs you won't need a baffle.. Here's one example of where you can get one, although this one is a bit too large..

12L Marine fuel tank

One other thing you'll need if you're adding power steering to your car is a power steering control unit this will give you a dial on your dash so you can dial in the amount of assistance it provides. They are available from http://www.rallywiz.com/ if you took the power steering out of that corsa you had on Sunday then the control unit would be 44.99.
